Afterschool
Alliance - The Alliance was formed on the belief that
afterschool programs are critical to children and families today,
and that the need for programs is not adequately addressed. As many
as 15 million children have no place to go after the school bell rings.
These children are more likely to be victims of crime or to participate
in risky behaviors. Meanwhile, children in afterschool programs have
improved grades, behavior and school attendance. They have important
opportunities to learn and grow.
ø American
Association of Higher Education - An independent, membership-based,
nonprofit organization dedicated to building human capital for higher
education. AAHE is the source of choice for information about higher
education on issues that matter in a democratic multi-racial society;
and AAHE promotes and disseminates examples of effective educational
practice to address those issues.
ø
Concord
Consortium - The appearance of new, emerging technologies
has the potential to ignite explosive strides in learning capacity
and curriculum development. Harnessing these technological resources
can result in a powerful extension of educational resources to all
people, regardless of their circumstances. The Concord Consortium
is committed to leading this drive forward by developing and using
the best in educational technology.
ø CORD
- A national nonprofit organization
providing innovative changes in education to prepare students for
greater success in careers and higher education. CORD assists educators
in secondary schools and colleges through new curricula, teaching
strategies, professional development, and partnerships with community
leaders, families, and employers.
ø Education
Resources Information Center - ERIC,
sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S.
Department of Education, produces the world’s premier database
of journal and non-journal education literature. The new ERIC online
system, released September 2004, provides the public with a centralized
ERIC Web site for searching the ERIC bibliographic database of more
than 1.1 million citations going back to 1966. Effective October 1,
more than 107,000 full-text non-journal documents (issued 1993-2004),
previously available through fee-based services only, will be available
for free.
ø Parent
Information and Resource Centers - The U.S. Department
of Education created the first PIRCs in 1995 to provide parents, schools
and organizations working with families with training, information,
and technical assistance to understand how children develop and what
they need to succeed in school. Today, more than 70 PIRCs operate
in almost all of the states across the nation. They work closely with
parents, educators and community organizations to strengthen partnerships
so that children can reach high academic standards.
